 Multiple Sclerosis !

Stem Cell Transplants May Help Some With Multiple Sclerosis

Stem cell transplants may halt the progression of aggressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in nearly half of those with the debilitating disease, but picking the right patients for the treatment is key, a new study suggests.Specifically, younger patients with a relapsing form of MS who were not severely disabled and who hadn't found relief with other treatments fared better than others over five years, the lead researcher found. Stem cell transplantation cannot be considered a cure for MS. However, it can be considered a concrete option for patients showing aggressive MS who have not responded to approved treatments. Using patients' own stem cells to reboot the immune system is a way to halt the advance of the disease. But the treatment can be risky because the patient's immune system has to be wiped out before the stem cells are transplanted, the researchers added. In fact, nearly 3 percent of the patients died shortly after receiving the transplant, and those deaths were directly related to the transplant, those deaths are a major concern because MS is not in itself life-threatening. A trial that compares stem cell transplants with other therapies to see whether stem cell transplants can become a treatment for patients who have progressive MS is about to start. Medications can slow the progression of MS and help patients manage symptoms, but there's no cure. To see how patients did over the long term after stem cell transplants, lead researcher followed 281 patients from 13 countries who received stem cell transplants between 1995 and 2006. The researchers found that 46 percent of the patients experienced progression-free survival at five years after transplant.

 Preterm Birth Risk !

Certain Bacteria May Affect Preterm Birth Risk

Certain types of bacteria in a pregnant woman's cervix and vagina can affect her risk of preterm birth. The discovery could lead to new ways to prevent preterm birth either by getting rid of bad bacteria or boosting protective bacteria, according to the lead researcher. For the study, the investigator analyzed vaginal swabs from 2,000 expectant mothers at three different points in pregnancy. The researcher found that specific types of bacteria -such as certain bifidobacterium and lactobacillus species -lowered the risk of preterm birth. They also found that other types of bacteria - specifically several anaerobic bacteria -greatly increased the risk. If further research confirms the findings, it could lead to new treatments to reduce the risk of preterm birth, the lead researcher suggested. For the first time in eight years, the number of preterm babies in the United States actually increased in 2016, and unfortunately, there are underlying causes that doctors still don't understand.  Decoding the causes of prematurity has been a riddle that's stumped researchers and clinicians for years, but this new study is finally shedding some light on a path toward offering treatment to women we can identify as being at-risk. Preterm birth is the leading cause of death among babies in the United States. It's also the leading cause of death of children under age 5 worldwide, the study author added. Survivors of preterm birth may face serious and lifelong health problems.

Flu Shot & Heart failure !

Flu Shot May Curb Respiratory Infections in People with Heart Failure

Flu and pneumonia vaccines may reduce heart failure patients' risk of dangerous respiratory infections, a new review suggests. More than 5 million Americans have heart failure, when the heart is too weak to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Respiratory infections are the leading cause of hospitalization for people with heart failure. These infections are associated with high death rates in a hospital, the lead author said. People older than 65 with heart failure may benefit more from high-dose vaccination, the researcher added. Vaccination represents a low-cost intervention that may be able to prevent the significant disease, death and cost associated with heart failure. That's because most vaccination clinical trials either haven't included heart failure patients or haven't looked at the impact of vaccines in heart failure patients. A deeper understanding of current vaccination practices within the heart failure population is necessary to guide population-level interventions aimed at improving vaccination rates. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends yearly flu vaccination for adults with heart failure. Heart societies such as the American College of Cardiology also advise an annual flu shot. The ACC also recommends pneumonia vaccination for people with heart failure.

Weight Loss & Uterine Cancer !

Weight Loss Tied to Lower Risk of Uterine Cancer

Weight loss may lower older women's risk of cancer of the endometrium, the lining of the uterus, a new study suggests. Many older adults think it's too late to benefit from weight loss, or think that because they are overweight or obese, the damage has already been done. It's never too late, and even moderate weight loss can make a big difference when it comes to cancer risk, lead researcher added. Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer and the fourth most common cancer among women in the United States, the researchers said. More than 75 percent of endometrial cancers occur in women aged 55 and older. The researchers reviewed data from more than 35,000 American women between the ages of 50 and 79. The study included an average of more than 10 years of follow-up. Though the study didn't prove cause and effect, losing weight was associated with a significantly lower risk of endometrial cancer, and that benefit was greatest in obese women, the researchers said. Women over 50 who lost 5 percent or more of their body weight had a 29 percent lower risk of endometrial cancer, regardless of their age or how much weight they lost, according to the lead researcher. Obese women who lost 5 percent or more of their body weight had a 56 percent reduction in their risk. Overweight or obese women who achieved a normal body mass index had the same risk as women who maintained a normal BMI, the lead researcher added. The researchers also found that women who gained more than 10 pounds had a 26 percent increased risk of endometrial cancer. This study tells us that weight loss, even later in life, is linked to a lower risk of endometrial cancer. The findings also support the development of weight loss programs as part of a cancer prevention strategy in overweight and obese adults.

 Toxic Metals !

Toxic Metals Found in E-Cigarette Liquid

Electronic cigarette liquids can contain high levels of toxic and potentially cancer-causing metals, a new study suggests. We do not know if these levels are dangerous, but their presence is troubling and could mean that the metals end up in the aerosol that e-cigarette user’s inhale, said the lead researcher. Top researcher analyzed the liquid of five brands of so-called first-generation e-cigarettes, which resemble traditional cigarettes. The researchers found liquids in those brands contained the heavy metals cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese and nickel. These metals are toxic when inhaled, the researchers said. In first-generation e-cigarettes, the cartridge of liquid is stored in close contact with the heating coil. When heated, the liquid creates the aerosol, or vapor, that users inhale. The researchers believe this heating coil is the main source of the dangerous metals. Perhaps regulators might want to look into an alternative material for e-cigarette heating coils, researcher added. The researchers did not examine the possible presence of the five metals in the aerosol. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires e-cigarette makers to submit ingredient lists and information about potentially harmful ingredients, including four of the five metals detected in this study -- nickel, lead, chromium and cadmium. The agency has studied but not yet issued proposed rules on e-cigarette labeling.
This suggests that the FDA should consider regulating the quality control of e-cigarette devices along with the ingredients found in e-cigarette liquids.

 Imaging in ADHD !

Imaging Study Confirms Brain Differences in People With ADHD

Researchers who pinpointed brain differences in people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) say their findings show the condition should be considered a brain disorder. This international study included more than 1,700 people with ADHD and more than 1,500 without the disorder. Participants were between the ages of 4 and 63. Lead researcher hope that this will help to reduce stigma that ADHD is just a label for difficult children or caused by poor parenting. This is definitely not the case, and this work will contribute to a better understanding of the disorder, lead researcher added. ADHD is characterized by inattention, overactivity and impulsivity that can interfere with learning and relationships. Brain scans revealed that five brain regions in those with ADHD were smaller than in those without ADHD. The greatest differences were seen in children. These differences are very small -- in the range of a few percent -- so the unprecedented size of our study was crucial to help identify these. Similar differences in brain volume are also seen in other psychiatric disorders, especially major depressive disorder. This study represents an important contribution to the field by providing robust evidence to support the notion of ADHD as a brain disorder.
